Eastern Region Afghanistan - Weekly Security Report: Week ending April 12, 2009.

FOR THE PROVINCES OF NURISTAN, KUNAR,

LAGHMAND & NANGARHAR

The following is a summary of security incidents recorded in the Northern Region

of Afghanistan (Nuristan, Kunar, Laghmand and Nangarhar Provinces) for the

week ending 12 April 2009.

The Eastern Region is seen as an unstable and hostile area in a majority of the

Provinces and Districts. Kunar Province continues to be the most active and

hostile and Jalalabad City being the only Low Risk area in the Region. Total

number of reported security incidents decreased to 58 incidents this week from

71 last week; of which 43 were relatively serious (63 last week) and 33 were

related to TB / AGE (51 last week). AGE activity saw a significant 22.4%

decrease from last weeks figure, which may have been due to the inclement

weather experienced over that period. Complex attacks remain the most

prevalent incident type in the Region this week at 20 incidents, followed by IED

attempts (6), Rocket Attacks (3) and an IED attack.

Notable incidents in the Region this week were:

• Kunar Province – 16 Complex Attacks, one (1) IED discovery, three (3)

Rocket Attacks and one (1) SAF Attack.

• Nangarhar Province – one (1) Kidnapping, two (2) IED discoveries and

an AGE murder / hanging incident to intimidate the local population.

• Laghman Province – one (1) Complex Attack and one (1) IED discovery.
