<description>This dataset contains the 3 Nautical Mile Boundaries located
within the vicinity of the main Hawaiian Islands.

Source: USGS Digital Line Graphs, 1983 version, and derived boundaries.

History: This file was created by merging the coast_n83 polygon file with
the islets_n83 polygon file from the State of Hawaii, Office of
Planning using the union tool in ESRI's ArcGIS 9.1. A three
nautical mile buffer was applied using the buffer tool in ArcGIS
9.1 then buffered polygons were merged. The coast_n83 and
islets_n83 polygons were clipped using the erase tool in ArcInfo
9.1. Individual polygon areas were calculated using the
calculate areas tool within ArvGIS 9.1. Projection is UTM Zone 4,
and datum is NAD 83. File was completed in December, 2006.
This dataset was collected from the Hawaii Statewide GIS Program: The Office of Planning GIS Program leads a multi-agency effort to establish, promote, and coordinate the use of geographic information systems (GIS) technology among Hawaii State Government agencies. The State Office of Planning is responsible for the planning and coordination of activities that are critical to the State&#8217;s enterprise GIS. The primary goal of the Statewide GIS Program is to improve overall efficiency and effectiveness in government decision-making.
